The defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers have been dropped to 40/1 to win the Super Bowl, the result of losing four straight games. Sure it's a nightmare, but I don't that I would rule them out of the Super Bowl derby just yet. We know that they have a similar personnel group to the team that won the Super Bowl last season, that is, if Troy Polamalu is on the field. We also know they can win in the post-season and they can win on the road. At 6-6, they're in a hole, and they are probably not going to catch Cincinnati for the division title. I'm sure they accept that part of it.

What they have to do, then, is win one of the wild card spots. They have already beaten Denver, which is a good thing, since there would at least be a shot that they could gain a couple of games on the Broncos. Who they really have to take dead aim at is Jacksonville, which is one game ahead of them (as well as others). The remaining games for the Steelers include this weekend's matchup against Cleveland (where they are a ten-point favorite), followed by home games against Green Bay and Baltimore, and a trip to Miami to play the Dolphins. It would be important for them to win all four, but even if they go 3-1 the game against Baltimore can't be the one loss, because that would give the Ravens the benefit of any tie-breakers, and pretty much cook Pittsburgh's goose......

Unlike the Steelers, the New York Giants, who are 30/1 to win the Super Bowl, actually have a chance to win their division, and truth be told, they are lucky that door is still open. They are just a game in back of the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, who they beat this past weekend. They can pull into a tie with Philly with a win this Sunday (they are a one-point favorite at home in the BetUS odds), and the three games that follow can not be considered "gimmes," as they visit Washington and play host to Carolina before the season finale against the Vikings.

At that point, what may play in their favor is that Minnesota might have clinched the NFC North but lost any chance to gain home field advantage (in other words, their playoff seed would be more or less frozen), so the Giants most likely would play against the "B" team, with Brett Favre going a series or two to keep his consecutive-game streak alive. The reason the Giants are viable, assuming they can get to the post-season, is that (a) They may have hit rock-bottom early enough to recover and gain some momentum as the season moves down the stretch, and (b) They have taken the "road trip" route to a Super Bowl victory before; in fact, it was just two seasons ago.

If you took a look at the Colts and Saints, and their chances of actually meeting in the Super Bowl, well, Indianapolis is +130 to win the AFC, while New Orleans is even money in the NFC. If you parlayed that, you'd come up with +360, or 18/5, that both of them will be there in Pasadena. As for the odds both of them will be undefeated, it's a little more difficult, because we don't know who they will be facing in the playoffs, but the games remaining for the Colts include home dates against the Broncos and Jets, and visits to Jacksonville and Buffalo, while New Orleans plays host to the Cowboys and Bucs, and travel to Atlanta and Carolina. Okay, I can calculate it next week if they are still both unbeaten by then......

In the "Did You Know" department, did you know that in terms of yardage, the New York Jets are #1 in the NFL in rushing offense and #1 in the AFC in total defense? That's right, they are. So how, you may ask, can they possibly be only 6-6 and out of the playoff picture if the season ended today?
